What are the PLA processing technologies?

Aug 17, 2021

PLA is the most productive variety among natural synthetic degradable plastics. PLA can be molded and processed using ordinary polymer processing technology and equipment. Processing techniques include extrusion, casting, blow molding, injection molding, hollow blow molding, fiber drawing, etc., which can be made into various films, sheets, fibers, spinning, etc.

PLA recycling methods include: organic resource recycling (composting), physical recycling, landfill, heat recovery (incineration), etc. PLA is a bio-based polymer synthesized from biomass resources, thus completely getting rid of its heavy dependence on petroleum resources; the environmental load caused by the manufacturing process is small; it has good compostability, biodegradability, and carbon dioxide produced by degradation. Water returns to nature and rejoins the photosynthesis process of plants, so that the carbon cycle on the earth is balanced (reduce carbon emissions). PLA can fully meet the requirements of sustainable development.

The biggest feature of PLA is the only transparent biodegradable plastic, which has been widely used in various transparent packaging containers, packaging films and daily necessities. In order to further expand the application field and scope of PLA, it must be modified. Through the use of physical modification, chemical modification and physical/chemical modification to give or improve the mechanical properties and functions of PLA. Such as heat resistance, toughness/softness, hydrolysis resistance, rigid flame retardancy, barrier properties, antibacterial and antibacterial properties.
