What are the bio-based PET and PEF plastics that Suntory and Coca-Cola are producing?
PET plastic is widely used in plastic packaging, plastic bottle containers, polyester fibers and other fields, and is a common resin in life. Traditional PET plastics are derived from petroleum resources and are not sustainable. In recent years, with the advancement of bio-manufacturing technology, more and more chemicals and materials can be manufactured from various types of biomass, such as corn starch, sugar cane, lignocellulose, etc.
Recently, well-known beverage companies such as Coca-Cola and Suntory have announced that they will develop bio-based PET plastic products. Suntory has pledged to use 100% sustainable PET plastic bottles for all product packaging globally by 2030, and to exclude petroleum-based plastics from its supply chain management.
The Coca-Cola Company plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and reduce the use of virgin plastics from petroleum by 3 million tons by 2025. At the same time, it has jointly developed the second-generation bio-based MEG (ethylene two alcohol) technology, which is based on plant waste and does not require the use of food crops.
In terms of carbon emissions, bio-based PET has a significant effect, and 100% bio-based PET products can reduce carbon emissions by up to 82%.
