New Technology Upcycle Used By The Largest Plastic Recycler Of USA

Feb 03, 2022

Honeywell announced that it would form a joint venture with avangard innovation to build an advanced recycling plant in Texas. The plant will use Honeywell's new technology upcycle.

Upcycle process technology adopts the industry-leading molecular transformation, pyrolysis and pollutant management technology, which greatly expands the types of recyclable plastics, including waste plastics that cannot be recycled, such as color, soft, multi-layer packaging or polystyrene. When combined with other chemical and mechanical recycling processes and the improvement of collection and classification processes, upcycle technology is expected to increase the proportion of recyclable plastic waste to 90% worldwide.

Upcycle can reduce the fossil raw materials consumed in the production of plastics, and its goal is to realize the circular economy of plastics. According to Honeywell, recycled plastics produced by the upcycle process can reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by 57% compared with plastics of the same weight produced from fossil materials.

Avangard innovative is the largest plastic recycler in the United States and will be the first company in the United States to adopt upcycle process technology. Honeywell and avangard will set up a joint venture plant in naturapcr area in Waller, Texas, with joint ownership and operation rights. The plant is expected to be put into operation in 2023, and 30000 tons of waste can be reused as the raw material of Honeywell recycled polymer every year.

Vimal Kapur, President and CEO of Honeywell performance materials and technologies, said: "by working with companies with experience in recycling and waste management, Honeywell can introduce recycling technology to the source of recycling, thus helping to form a closed loop in the plastic supply chain." "Upcycle technology expands the types of recyclable plastics, including those that cannot be recycled, which allows Honeywell to play a key role in promoting the circular plastics economy."
