PTT of Thailand: Home composting is the future

On November 25, 2024, PTT MCC of Thailand announced that it will soon launch a new home compostable solution based on BioPBS materials, which is expected to inject new vitality into the global environmental protection cause.

Compared with traditional materials, this BioPBS product has the significant advantage of easy biodegradation. It does not require cumbersome separation processes and does not rely on special treatment facilities. It can decompose naturally in a home composting environment, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and helping to reduce waste from the source.

Previously, in April 2024, PTT MCC used cellulose fibers from Nordic Bioproducts Group to produce BioPBS that can be home composted. This cellulose fiber improves the home composting and biodegradability of BioPBS.

1. Home composting materials represent the future development direction. The latest research data reveals a grim reality: the global urban solid waste recycling rate in 2024 is only 19%, and a large amount of uncontrolled waste is scattered everywhere. Due to improper disposal, it is continuously eroding the natural environment and polluting water systems. The United Nations Environment Programme's "Global Waste Management Outlook 2024" report has sounded the alarm. Against this background, the importance of home compostable materials has become increasingly prominent and has become the key to solving the garbage problem.

PTTMCC firmly believes that home compostable materials represent the future development direction, with the characteristics of simplicity, efficiency and sustainability. This type of compostable packaging material has significant advantages:

Convenient waste management: Home compostable packaging is suitable for home composting boxes and can also be integrated into municipal organic waste streams, greatly simplifying the waste disposal process and integrating environmental protection into daily life.

Deep environmental protection practitioner: It plays a significant role in transferring landfill waste. Natural decomposition not only improves the quality of compost, but also significantly reduces methane emissions from landfills. At the same time, it effectively curbs the growth of microplastic pollution and protects the ecological home in all aspects.

2. Home composting has become an emerging force in Europe

Globally, Europe's compostable materials are in a leading position. Driven by the European PPWR initiative, industrial composting is becoming a more simplified process. But the current trend has changed. Home composting has emerged as a popular new force with its advantages of simplicity and accessibility.

Home composting saves consumers from the trouble of material separation, gets rid of the dependence on complex systems, and easily starts the journey of environmental protection. PTTMCC keenly captures the wind direction and exerts precise efforts. The raw materials it supplies perfectly meet the standards of home composting and stand at the forefront of the industry.

European PPWR legislation requires the mandatory application of compostable materials in single-serving packaging of coffee, tea and other beverages, and even in the field of fruit and vegetable adhesive labels (European Parliament, 2024), which anchors the direction of industry development.
