South Korea revises food contact material standards to allow PBAT in food packaging
The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is conducting public consultation on a proposal to allow the use of polybutylene adipate (PBAT) in food utensils, containers and packaging. If approved, PBAT will be added to the Allowed Materials List for these products. At present, the companies involved in the PBAT industry in South Korea mainly include SK and LG Chem.
After several revisions over the years, this is a major revision to the 2021 edition. The proposed revisions to the Standard and Specification for Food Utensils, Containers and Packaging are in response to industry demand for biodegradable materials for use in containers and packaging.
