South Korea's Samwha Paint Has Developed A Biodegradable Paint Container Based On PBAT

Aug 13, 2025

South Korea's Samwha Paint has developed a biodegradable paint container based on PBAT and has begun using it.

On August 7, South Korea's Samwha Paint Industry Co., Ltd. developed a biodegradable paint container for its high-end water-based paints.

To develop this container, Samwha Paint signed a business agreement with SKLivio, an investment company for SKC's biodegradable materials business, and P&B, a specialized container manufacturer, in January of last year and has been collaborating on joint research and development.

Samwha Paint's biodegradable paint container is made from a blend of the biodegradable material PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) and natural limestone. Unlike oxidative biodegradation, which requires the addition of biodegradation accelerators, PBAT decomposes naturally under microbial, heat, and moisture conditions. Under composting conditions, over 90% of the material decomposes within six months and returns to the environment.

The biodegradable paint container was first used in the high-end water-based paint "iLux 10L." The iLux series is designed to be safe for use even in spaces with children. This eco-friendly paint combines environmental friendliness with high quality, and has been certified by Eco-Label, Korea's leading environmental certification.

Samwha Paint has incorporated the slogan "Think Green" into the container, along with an intuitive design that reflects the material's properties. This initiative aims to encourage consumers to make environmentally friendly choices.

A Samwha Paint representative stated, "We are accelerating the development of environmentally friendly technologies to achieve environmental protection and environmental value. We plan to gradually promote the use of biodegradable paint containers to broaden consumer choices."

As part of its ESG management, Samwha Paint is building a diversified portfolio of environmentally friendly products, including water-based paints, bio-based paints, and recycled paints.
