Starting in 2023, supermarkets and grocery stores in Spain will ban the sale of fruits and vegetables in plastic packaging.

The new regulations also include measures to encourage the purchase of bulk, unpackaged products and the use of non-water bottles. The ban on fruit and vegetable packaging will apply to products weighing less than 1.5 kg. France has already carried out similar legislation before, which will take effect next year.

The government is formulating measures to encourage retailers to sell unpackaged fresh products. Customers can bring their own reusable containers, but the sanitary conditions must be regulated by the agency. According to the same source, one of the main goals of the draft decree is to halve the sales of beverage plastic bottles by 2030 and make the packaging on the market 100% recyclable.
