On September 15, Finnish paper giant UPM Specialty Materials announced the expansion of its grease-resistant barrier technology-previously used for packaging paper-into label face stock with the launch of a new grade, UPM Asendo™ 80.
This 80 gsm label face stock offers resistance to oil and grease penetration without the use of PFAS, targeting applications such as olive oil labels, food-contact packaging, and labels requiring resistance to high-fat contents.
This move directly addresses the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) restrictions on PFAS in food-contact packaging, which will come into full effect on August 12, 2026. UPM states that no PFAS are intentionally added during production; each batch undergoes testing by an independent third-party laboratory, and compliance documentation is provided to converters.
Asendo 80 is compatible with various adhesives and suitable for UV flexo and UV inkjet printing. It is available with FSC™/PEFC certification and meets US FDA and German BfR requirements for food contact. Kirsi Lahtela, a UPM product manager, noted that the technology has been proven in packaging applications for years; its entry into the label sector enables converters to secure higher-value food labeling business.
For the self-adhesive label value chain, the focus extends beyond simply having "PFAS-free face stock"; the face stock, adhesive, ink, die-cutting process, and labeling environment collectively determine final compliance and durability. UPM is now accepting sample requests and offers technical team support to help converters conduct proofing and validation based on specific label constructions.
