What bio-based materials are large companies such as Pepsi, COSTA, QALO using?

Costa: Starts using bio-based coffee cup lids in some UK stores

Recently, Costa Coffee, an international coffee chain, launched 100% plant-based lids in 150 stores across the UK. The lid is made from renewable plant material and is fully recyclable. Costa will officially launch the new coffee cup lid in early 2023 if the use in these stores is positive.

These lids are sized to cover small, medium and large takeaway cups and have a 50% lower carbon footprint compared to current polystyrene plastic lids.

As part of an effort to reduce its environmental impact, Costa Coffee last year changed the lining of its takeaway cups from petroleum-based plastic to plant-based plastic. The carbon footprint of the new cups is 26% lower than when Costa Coffee's previous takeaway cups were recycled.

PepsiCo: Launches eco-friendly display stand for Lay's potato chips, made from bio-based thermoplastics

PepsiCo is expanding the use of UBQ, a bio-based thermoplastic, across its supply chain, rolling out eco-friendly Lay's potato chip displays across Europe. The stands were made by UBQ Materials, a Tel Aviv, Israel-based business and climate technology developer of advanced materials made from unsorted household waste.

Following PepsiCo's successful pilot with UBQ to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping pallets, the company is deepening its collaboration with UBQ in other categories across the supply chain to partially replace traditional petroleum-based plastics with UBQ products.

As a bio-based thermoplastic, UBQ is made from 100% unsorted household waste, including all organics. The use of this product can reduce landfill and incineration of waste and reduce environmental pollution. UBQ Materials claims that every ton of UBQ produced can prevent up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide from polluting the environment.

QALO: Partnering with the Pela Company to create the world's first bio-compostable wedding ring

QALO, a pioneer in original silicone wedding rings, has partnered with Pela, creator of compostable phone cases, to launch a line of rings that are fully compostable, from product to packaging. Designed by QALO's team of outdoor enthusiasts and made from Pela's signature plant-based materials, the QALO x Pela collection allows customers to demonstrate their commitment to themselves and the planet.
