BASF launches home compostable coated paper, 40% thinner than PLA coated paper, resistant to 100°C boiling water

Metpack of Turkey cooperates with BASF of Germany to launch home compostable coated paper and paperboard certified by EN13432. Metpack's Ezycompost coated paper uses BASF's biopolymer ecovio®70PS14H6 (in fact, this grade has been launched in 2023, see for details), which has many advantages: FDA-certified for food contact, good barrier properties for liquids, greases, etc., stable in 100°C boiling water, no microplastics are produced in home composting after use, and can be organically recycled with food waste.

Driven by legislation, some countries have seen a major social trend of shifting from pure plastic packaging to paper packaging. But paper itself is not suitable as packaging for many foods, especially those containing liquid and fat ingredients.

The coated paper can be used in food contact scenarios such as cold drink cups and microwave trays, and can be produced on standard molding production lines. Its lamination speed is faster than PLA, the film layer is 40% thinner than PLA, and the lamination speed is comparable to PE; it does not stick to the cooling roller, has good sealing and printing performance, and does not require adhesives for single/co-extrusion.

The relevant person in charge of Metpack said that Ezycompost has the same strength as PE coated paper, is compostable and has no microplastic problem, and is faster to process and home compostable than PLA. BASF's ecovio®70PS14H6 is also suitable for industrial composting, with a bio-based content of 70-80%, and a BMB grade with a lower carbon footprint. Its excellent barrier properties make it possible to use recycled paper for food packaging.

BASF's ecovio® is certified compostable according to multiple standards and has significant advantages in the food field. It reduces food waste through biodegradation, promotes nutrient recycling, and helps the development of a circular economy.

Metpack is Turkey's leading polymer (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, home compostable and multi-layer) extruded paper and paperboard processor, mainly using extrusion coating technology to produce customized barrier coated paperboard. Located in Istanbul, the company has 40,000 square meters of facilities with an annual production capacity of more than 84,000 tons and is equipped with five unique extrusion lamination lines.
