Mengniu: Successfully developed straws made of PLA/PBS, and will develop new plastic materials with faster degradation
On April 28, China Mengniu Dairy Co., Ltd. released its 2024 Sustainable Development Report.
The report shows that in order to improve the pertinence and effectiveness of the group's green packaging work, Mengniu has established a special working group on green packaging and incorporated it into the group's sustainable development governance structure.
Mengniu has formulated a "4R1D" packaging design strategy to guide the product lines of each business unit to carry out innovative research and development in material use, packaging design, process flow, etc., and explore the realization of packaging recycling and reduction throughout the group.
Reduce-Reduce the amount of packaging materials.
On the premise of meeting the packaging functions of each product, reduce the use of packaging materials, thereby reducing the burden of packaging on the environment from the root.
Recycle: Promote recycling
Carry out recyclable design of packaging, improve the recyclability of packaging, and try to use recycled materials in packaging to promote the maximum utilization of resources.
Reuse: Use reusable design
Increase the reuse value of packaging, further extend the packaging life cycle, and reduce resource waste.
Renew: Application of renewable materials
Mengniu is committed to applying renewable resources in packaging, such as paper, bamboo fiber, plant-based plastics, etc., to reduce the use of petroleum-based virgin plastics and reduce dependence on fossil resources.
Degradable: Targeted use of degradable materials
In response to the problem that some packaging accessories (such as straws, spoons, etc.) are easy to scatter and difficult to recycle, we actively explore the use of degradable materials for production. Such measures are aimed at protecting the environment while reducing the cost of packaging material processing, in order to achieve both environmental protection and economic benefits. We have successfully developed straws made of PLA/PBS, and are actively exploring new plastic material solutions that degrade faster.
Mengniu Green Packaging Progress Goals
Reduce fossil-based virgin plastics: Conduct research on lightweight packaging, bio-based materials, etc., and take 2020 as the benchmark. By 2030, the cumulative reduction of fossil-based virgin plastics will reach 35,000 tons.
Packaging is recyclable/uses degradable materials: Develop single-material composite films, low-additive technology, and degradable materials to achieve 100% recyclable, reusable or degradable packaging by 2035.
