This is the reality Mary O'Riordan-founder of the Irish circular healthcare company HaPPE Earth-witnessed while working on the medical front lines: the global healthcare industry consumes billions of pieces of disposable plastic protective gear annually, most of which ends up as landfill waste.
HaPPE Earth is not a traditional consumables supplier; it is a startup that packages "compostable PPE + on-site composting + ESG data tracking" into a closed-loop system. Founded in Cork, Ireland, by infectious disease physician Mary and operations expert Lisa, the company's model tackles the core of the medical plastic dilemma. It supplies EN13432-certified, plant-based compostable protective gear alongside on-site biodigestion equipment. This system co-processes used PPE with hospital food waste to create nitrogen-rich fertilizer, while a data platform quantifies carbon emissions and reduction outcomes.
A 2025 industry report revealed that disposable medical plastics in Europe generated over 900,000 tonnes of waste in 2023 alone, with associated costs reaching €23 billion. Faced with this challenge, a tiered response strategy has been proposed: reducing usage, shifting to reusable alternatives, and adopting compostable materials in scenarios where alternatives are not feasible.
HaPPE Earth chose to tackle the most difficult area-the clinical front line. Partnering with specialist supplier Bio4Pack, the company launched products such as aprons and hairnets made from plant-based starch and cellulose. These come with a comprehensive end-of-life solution: an on-site, closed-loop biodigestion system that converts waste into pathogen-free soil amendment within 24 hours, truly achieving a "cradle-to-cradle" lifecycle.
For healthcare workers, the difference is tangible: the aprons offer superior breathability compared to traditional plastic products, and-more importantly-provide a sense of relief, free from the guilt associated with waste.
For healthcare institutions, adopting this solution involves both procurement and clinical decisions, requiring alignment across supplier qualifications, regulatory compliance, and clinical acceptance. HaPPE Earth's closed-loop system is currently in active operation in hospitals and is expanding into additional sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and food processing. As Mary puts it, "Together, we form a powerful combination." When compostable materials meet on-site processing systems, a proper end-of-life solution for single-use medical plastics is no longer a distant dream.
