New Zealand to make compostable fruit and vegetable labels mandatory

Recently, the New Zealand government has passed legislation to eliminate the labeling of agricultural products that are not home compostable. From July 1, 2023, the labels of agricultural products (including fruits and vegetables) produced in New Zealand must be home compostable; before mid-2025, the agricultural product labels of imported agricultural products can be exempted. The phase-out does not include labeling of products exported from New Zealand.

Home composting means meeting one of the following criteria:

AS 5810-2010 Biodegradable plastics – Biodegradable plastics suitable for home composting.

NF T51-800 Plastics - Specification for plastics suitable for home composting.
