Polylactic acid (PLA) mineral water bottles are here, 9 yuan a bottle

On February 18, 2025, Win Win Water, a British bottled water company, took an important step in the field of environmentally friendly bottled water, launching natural alkaline electrolyte mineral water in 100% plant-based biodegradable bottles, providing an alternative to traditional plastic bottles.

It is understood that Win Win Water's 500 ml natural alkaline mineral water is taken from national forests, with pure water quality and rich natural minerals and electrolytes. In terms of price, 24 bottles are priced at 26 pounds and 48 bottles are priced at 48 pounds (1 pound ≈ 9.1589 yuan).

This PLA mineral water bottle, including the bottle body, label and cap, is made of Luminy polylactic acid (PLA) provided by TotalEnergies Corbion (TEC), which is extracted from sugarcane. It can be decomposed within 90 days in commercial composting facilities. According to a 2012 report, there are 271 approved composting sites in the UK that can process polylactic acid, which provides a guarantee for the effective degradation of bottles.

Derek Atkinson, vice president of sales at TEC, said: "More and more water companies are using PLA bottles because of their recyclable and compostable properties, which will help end plastic pollution." At present, the global plastic reduction campaign is in full swing, and policies of various countries are leaning towards environmentally friendly packaging. The EU has completely banned disposable plastic products, and some states in the United States require companies to reduce disposable plastic packaging. Win Win Water's products fully comply with these regulatory requirements, reducing policy risks for companies. In addition, market research shows that 66% of global consumers are willing to pay a higher price for sustainable products, and 73% of young consumers prefer environmentally friendly brands. Win Win Water's products just fit this market trend.

However, Win Win Water also faces some challenges. At present, the production cost of degradable materials is more expensive than traditional PET bottles, which may affect the speed of market penetration of products, and it is necessary to strengthen consumer education so that the public can fully realize the environmental value of products instead of just focusing on prices.
