Uzbekistan Develops Biodegradable Film Using Water-Soluble Polysaccharides

Mar 30, 2026

For decades, plastics have accumulated in soil and water, decomposing very slowly, making plastic pollution a global ecological and public health problem. Scientists at the Polymer Plant Chemistry Laboratory of the Yunusov Institute of Plant Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, have developed a novel formula using water-soluble polysaccharides from local plants.

The biodegradable film made with this formula is both environmentally friendly and completely harmless to the environment.

In appearance and mechanical properties, this film is similar to synthetic polyethylene film, but its composition is entirely made of natural plant polysaccharides. It decomposes easily in both soil and aquatic environments.

This biodegradable film has broad application prospects in the food and pharmaceutical industries, while also playing an important role in environmental protection.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan has issued a patent certificate for this invention, patent number IAP 8274.
