BASF's new biodegradable modified coating material can withstand the use temperature from -40°C to 100°C
BASF is expanding its ecovio® portfolio for extrusion coating of paper and board by adding certified compostable grades for household and industrial use for hot and cold food packaging. The new coated grade ecovio® 70 PS14H6 is food contact certified and exhibits excellent specific barrier properties against liquids, fats, greases and mineral oils, and temperature stability in boiling water (up to 100°C). Additionally, it has excellent adhesion to many types of paper and cardboard. It can therefore also be used, for example, in cups and jars for dairy products (also frozen), packaging for sandwiches and cereal bars, bowls and trays for sweets and snacks, take-away cups for hot and cold drinks and soups or any Other functional paper packaging. After use, food packaging made from paper coated with ecovio® 70 PS14H6 can be composted in home gardens in accordance with national regulations, or in industrial composting facilities. Thus, this new household compostable biopolymer supports organic matter recycling and helps close the nutritional chain for a circular economy.
Binder-free and excellent processability in single or multi-layer extrusions
The new home compostable grades offer better performance than biopolymers currently available on the market. Extruded in one or more layers, the coating can impart additional barrier properties to paper and board for food packaging without the need for adhesives. Paper coating line speeds are comparable to PE. The material showed no tack to cold rolls and had excellent sealing and printability. Coating thicknesses are comparable to PE, depending on application and equipment, so it can also be used to make very thin coatings.
Michael Bernhard Schick, Head of Global Markets Biopolymers at BASF: "The new ecovio® paper-coated grades expand end-of-life options for paper packaging by being certified compostable for domestic and industrial use. Driven by legislation in some countries, there are The major social trend of changing from pure plastic packaging to paper packaging. Paper itself is not suitable for packaging many different foods, especially foods with liquid and fatty ingredients. We provide a strong, A sustainable packaging solution that can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 100°C. Therefore, based on outstanding technical properties and the decisive added advantage that the paper packaging is compostable at home, ecovio® 70 PS14H6 enables the organic recycling of food waste.” According to ASTM D 6866, the new biopolymer has a biobased content of between 70-80% from renewable resources. It complements the ecovio® paper coatings portfolio, which also includes other customizable grades of industrially compostable products whose properties can be adjusted to different market needs.
BASF's biopolymer enables recycling of organic matter
The BASF biopolymer ecovio® is certified compostable according to standards such as DIN EN 13432. It is a blend of BASF PBAT ecoflex® and renewable raw materials.
