Bugaboo launches stroller made of bio-based PA6
The stroller is the result of a collaboration between DSM Engineered Materials, Fibrant, Neste and Bugaboo, and its main components are made from DSM's 100% bio-based polyamide 6 (PA6) material, Akulon B-MB. The material is made from bio-based feedstocks from Fibrant and Neste, including Neste RE.
Neste RE is a polymer feedstock made from 100% bio-based materials such as waste and residues. Also part of the mix is Fibrant's EcoLactam Bio material, a caprolactam with a carbon footprint of 3.3 (expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram of caprolactam). This bio-based version of caprolactam is a key component of PA6, a material that has reduced Fibrant's carbon footprint by more than 50 percent.
Compared to traditional PA6, PA6 made of Akulon B-MB can reduce carbon footprint by about 75%, and the carbon footprint of the whole stroller is reduced by 24%.
The bio-based version has the same mechanical properties as traditional Akulon grades and is a drop-in replacement that meets Bugaboo's safety standards. Bugaboo plans to convert major components of its entire stroller portfolio to bio-based materials starting in 2023.
