Finland: Committed to a new generation of bio-based sustainable packaging
Last month, Ms. Outi Suomi, head of the Bio and Circular Project, Finland, Business Finland, and Ms. Ni Wen, senior business officer, were invited to give speeches at the IPIF 2022 International Packaging Innovation Forum. At the conference, Ms. Outi Suomi first introduced the two major goals set by Business Finland in 2021, of which a zero-carbon future is one of the key goals. Finland also has great potential to redefine wood, excelling at replacing fossil-based plastics and other materials with bio-based sustainable fibres.
Bio-based products are now part of everyday life in Finland, and consumers are looking forward to more sustainable solutions on the market. Therefore, recyclable bio-based materials are of great significance for society to achieve carbon neutrality.
Circular economy, as a production and consumption model, requires people to extend the use time of existing materials and products as much as possible by sharing, reusing, repairing, recycling, etc., thereby extending the life cycle of products. Specifically, waste reduction. When a product reaches the end of its useful life, keep its materials in the economic cycle as much as possible, so that these materials can be reused and continue to create value.
In her speech, Ms. Outi Suomi introduced some current projects related to packaging research and development in Finland, which are organized by Finnish universities, research institutions, enterprises and the Finnish National Technology Research Center VTT.
