Macau bans import of non-degradable plastic tableware from 2024
On September 4, 2023, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, in accordance with the provisions of Article 5, Paragraph 1 (5) of Law No. 7/2003 "Foreign Trade Law" as amended by Law No. 3/2016, passed the The Chief Executive's Instruction No. 146/2023 prohibits the import of non-degradable disposable plastic plates, cups and disposable foam food trays. The relevant Chief Executive's Instruction will take effect from January 1, 2024.
This is another new measure introduced by the SAR government to reduce plastics, following the introduction of control measures for disposable foam tableware, non-degradable disposable plastic catering straws, beverage stirring sticks and knives, forks and spoons.
In order to allow the industry to have a clearer understanding of the control scope and specific operational requirements, the Environmental Protection Bureau will arrange subsequent briefings to further explain to relevant chambers of commerce and the industry to ensure the smooth implementation of future control measures.
