Alibaba data: sales of sustainable products such as biodegradable tableware/shopping bags have increased significantly
According to insights from the Alibaba platform, during the period between May-July 2022 and May-July 2023, the gross merchandise volume (GMV) of sustainable products in multiple industries will increase significantly year-on-year (YoY). Industries that continue to see significant growth in product sales include:
1. Beauty and accessories: Consumers are increasingly paying attention to the ingredients and materials used in everyday beauty products, which has both buyers and suppliers adapting to these trends. For example, the GMV of plant fiber false eyelashes on the Alibaba platform increased by 129% year-on-year.
2. Home and Garden: As consumers become more conscious about the items they bring into their homes, demand for eco-friendly and sustainable home products is on the rise. This is especially true for kitchenware, where GMV for biodegradable plates and cutlery increased 122% year over year.
3. Building materials: As global forest resources become increasingly depleted, buyers are looking for alternatives to traditional wood resources. In fact, the GMV of wood plastic composite wall panels (WPC) increased by 121% year-on-year. Wood-plastic composite wall panels are an alternative to traditional wood wall panels and offer the same waterproof, fire-resistant and weather-resistant properties.
4. Packaging and printing: Buyers want to make sustainable choices at every step of their product creation journey. Starch-based degradable materials and PLA (polylactic acid) have gradually become the mainstream of plastic bags and express bags, with GMV increasing by 67% year-on-year.
5. Diamond mining: Traditional diamond mining causes environmental damage and produces large amounts of carbon emissions. Therefore, people are looking for other eco-friendly ways to obtain diamonds. Man-made diamonds have become a popular alternative to traditional diamonds, with their GMV increasing by 35% year-on-year.
