Starbucks Korea starts using bio-based straws

Starting from June 25, Starbucks Korea will pilot the use of plastic straws made of plant-based materials in about 200 stores across the country. This move is in response to customer complaints that paper straws are fragile and affect the taste of drinks.

Previously, all Starbucks stores in Korea have used paper straws instead of plastic straws. This is the first time that plastic straws have been used again after a lapse of 7 years.

The new straws are made of plastic materials derived from plants such as sugarcane and are expected to be more durable and comfortable than existing paper straws.

Starbucks said that the introduction of the new straws is not only to improve customer convenience, but also a sustainable choice. It is particularly worth mentioning that they have also formulated a specific environmental protection implementation plan. The store will set up a special plastic straw recycling bin and test the recycling system for recycled straws. A person related to Starbucks Korea said: "The plant-based plastic straws launched this time are made of environmentally friendly materials, unlike petroleum-based plastics," and "they are evaluated as alternatives that can reduce carbon emissions."
