Another UAE emirate bans single-use plastic bags

Umm Al Quwain will ban single-use plastics from 1 January 2023.

All bags must be biodegradable, multi-purpose or made of paper or fabric, according to the decision of the Umm Al Quwain Administrative Council.

Umm Al Quwain is one of the seven emirates in the UAE. Umm al-Quwain's ban follows similar bans in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

In Abu Dhabi, the ban on single-use plastics came into effect on June 1, 2022, while in Dubai, from July 1, 2022, retailers will be charging Phil 25 per bag.

Starting next year, outlets in Umm al-Quwain will have to charge customers an extra 25 fils for each plastic bag they use. This is in preparation for a total ban on single-use plastic bags in the UAE.
