100% Plant Based PET Bottle Produced By Suntory

Jan 26, 2022

Recently, Suntory announced that it has produced a PET prototype bottle made of 100% plant-based material.

Orangina's 100% plant-based PET bottle prototype, including the cap and label, are all plant-based PET.

Previously, the company pledged to use 100% sustainable PET plastic bottles globally for all product packaging by 2030 and to exclude petroleum-based plastics from its supply chain management. The bio-based PET prototype bottle is a key step in realizing its 2030 vision!

According to reports, the prototype bottle is produced for Suntory's iconic brand Orangina in Europe and its best-selling bottled mineral water brand Suntory Tennensui in Japan.

The bottle also marks a breakthrough in Suntory's long-term partnership with American sustainable technology company Anellotech.

We know that PET is produced using two raw materials, 70% terephthalic acid (PTA) and 30% monoethylene glycol (MEG).

The Suntory prototype bottle is made by combining Anellotech's technology, a plant-based paraxylene from wood chips (which has been converted to plant-based PTA), and a pre-existing plant-based MEG made from molasses.
