The Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change of Malaysia has set a goal to completely ban plastic bags in all areas of the country from 2025.
Minister Nik Nazmi pointed out on Tuesday (9th) that under the 2018-2030 zero plastic bag blueprint, all businesses will not use plastic bags, and the department will draw up a set of national guidelines for all parties to follow.
Asked whether the authorities will punish merchants who violate the ban at that time, he emphasized that in addition to punishment, rewards will also be provided.
Nik Nazmi pointed out that the no-plastic bag policy will be implemented in stores first, including the imposition of plastic bag surcharges; after that, roadside stalls and restaurants, but this can be implemented in stages over several years.
He said that the states and relevant local governments have their own objective conditions in implementing this policy, so the federal government is willing to give space and delegate authority to the state governments to set the amount of plastic bag surcharges and businesses have to pay plastic bag fees The number of times, and the method of income distribution, and it will be expanded to all states and fields across the country after two years.
He pointed out that Malaysia is one of the top ten countries in the world facing the problem of plastic waste.
