Dow, Zermatt, and Nature's Variety jointly announced the launch of a new pet food packaging solution
On September 29, 2025, Dow, Zermatt, and Nature's Variety announced the launch of a new pet food packaging solution.
This collaboration involves Dow providing recycled materials obtained through advanced recycling (also known as chemical recycling) technologies. Zermatt, a Spanish packaging manufacturer founded in 1970, specializes in creating high-performance, sustainable packaging solutions for a variety of applications. Nature's Variety, founded in 2021, is a European pet food brand dedicated to providing high-quality, natural foods for cats and dogs.
This innovative product is already available in Spain, France, and Portugal. Nature's Variety pet food pouches contain 10% recycled content (using a mass balance approach), helping to meet the 2030 target for contact-sensitive packaging under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The brand's mid-term goal is to increase the recycled content to 30% by 2030.
The core packaging breakthrough lies in simplifying the original multi-material structure (PET/PE) to a single-material polyethylene (PE) film structure, which complies with the European Committee for Standardization's anticipated "Design for Recyclability" (D4R) standard.
This D4R structure paves the way for the safe use of recycled plastics in food contact and other contact-sensitive applications, providing consumer peace of mind while reducing reliance on virgin resources and promoting the development of a circular economy for food packaging.
This new packaging, along with other innovative Dow packaging solutions, will be showcased at the K 2025 trade show (K2025) in Düsseldorf, Germany, from October 8 to 15, 2025, in Dow Hall 04.1, just outside Hall 4.
