Paques of the Netherlands Develops PHA-Coated Paper and Paperboard

On September 29th, Dutch bioplastics producer Paques Biomaterials signed a collaboration agreement with Belgian company Subeco to jointly develop polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) technology for barrier coatings on paper and paperboard packaging.

A statement stated that Subeco's extensive experience in high-performance barrier solutions and Paques's expertise in PHA technology will combine their respective strengths to develop coatings that make packaging fully biodegradable, fully circular, and independent of fossil resources.

Subeco produces paper and paperboard barrier solutions for packaging in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Paques specializes in the synthesis of PHA-based biopolymers, with its PHA2Use demonstration plant launching in the Netherlands in 2022. At the end of 2024, the company signed an agreement with Dutch company ESKA to establish an industrial-scale PHA synthesis plant at its paper mill in Hoogezand, Netherlands, using papermaking process water as feedstock.
