IKEA announces the use of bio-based adhesives

Recently, IKEA China released a news that IKEA is gradually transitioning from chemical stone based adhesives to biological based adhesives, with the goal of reducing the use of fossil-based adhesives by 40% and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from adhesives by 30% by 2030.

It is understood that most of IKEA's adhesive consumption is used for plate production. Finding new adhesive solutions is one of the main ways to reduce IKEA's climate footprint. In response, Andreas Rangel Ahrens, the head of climate at Intertek IKEA Group, said, "Since 5% of the climate footprint in the IKEA value chain is derived from the adhesive in the plate, this measure will bring positive impact, which also means that IKEA has taken a key step towards the goal of limiting global climate change to 1.5 ° C."

In addition, in order to realize the transition to 100% use of bio-based adhesives, IKEA recently launched an accelerated plan to pilot a new adhesive program with external partners.

"For IKEA, this measure is significant and far-reaching, and we have made efforts for it for more than ten years. It not only meets our demand for adhesives with lower climate footprint, but also confirms the truth that small changes can really make a big difference. We hope to encourage other companies to take similar actions." said Venla Hemmil ä, material and technology engineer of IKEA of Sweden.

We will gradually realize the transition from chemical stone-based adhesives to bio-based adhesives. The goal is that by the end of fiscal year 2030, most of the plate manufacturers in IKEA's supply chain will use adhesives with lower climate footprint. In Kazluluda, Lithuania, the first IKEA industrial factory has now applied the adhesive system made of special corn starch * in large-scale production. This is the result of our unremitting efforts to find alternatives to fossil-based adhesives in the past dec

The research and application of bio-based adhesives are expanding day by day. China, as a major adhesive production and consumption country in the world, has an average annual growth rate higher than the national economic growth rate in the same period. Trialdehyde adhesives (urea-formaldehyde, phenolic and melamine-formaldehyde resin adhesives) have become the largest production of adhesives with an annual market share of 40%.

According to experts, the plywood and woodworking industry is the largest consumer of adhesives in China, followed by the building materials industry. In recent years, with the enhancement of people's awareness of environmental protection, the improvement of national environmental protection laws and regulations, the reduction of oil reserves, and the price rise and environmental pollution caused by petroleum-based polymer materials, the adhesive industry has reconsidered natural adhesives. As a kind of renewable and bio-organic resource, the environment-friendly adhesive has become a research hotspot again, and its application is also very extensive.
