Indonesia Will Completely Ban Single-use Plastic Products By The End Of 2029

Jun 09, 2023

Indonesia will completely ban single-use plastic products by the end of 2029, including polystyrene foam used to hold food, disposable plastic straws, plastic tableware, and plastic shopping bags.

Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti said in the announcement on Monday (June 5): "This is a treatment method for packaging waste that is difficult to collect and recycle, has no economic value, and may pollute the environment. .”

Indonesia is one of the countries producing the most plastic waste in the world. According to Indonesian official data, in 2022, Indonesia, with a population of 270 million, produced 12.6 million tons of plastic waste, equivalent to 46.7 kilograms per person.

According to a study by the environmental group "Zero Waste Indonesia Alliance", only 9% of Indonesia's plastic waste is recycled, and the rest is either sent to landfill or flows into rivers and oceans.

Siti revealed that the central government will ask the provinces to develop a roadmap to reduce plastic waste to implement the ban.

She also stressed that the private sector should play a role in reducing plastic waste. She asked all manufacturers to reduce the use of plastic packaging by 30% by 2029 to reduce the problem of plastic waste downstream.
