Indonesian Government Promotes Biodegradable Plastics

Recently, Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Katasamita announced that the Indonesian government plans to lead the development of biodegradable plastics in Southeast Asia through the use of bioconversion technology.

Bioconversion uses living microorganisms to decompose plastic without producing microplastics or toxic residues. It also allows for waste to be recycled or degrade naturally. The Minister stated in a statement that this technology offers a practical solution to plastic pollution, particularly single-use plastics. Through this initiative, Indonesia is expected to become a leader in the development and application of biodegradable plastics in Southeast Asia.

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry will develop a roadmap and action plan, with the initial focus being the drafting of national standards for biodegradable plastics. In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, the initiative will also help Indonesian products expand into international markets as global demand for environmentally friendly practices continues to grow.

The Ministry also plans to introduce policies to identify potential raw materials for biodegradable plastic production while ensuring that green industry development does not compromise national food security.

The Minister added that the government may offer incentives to industry players that implement concrete measures to support green plastics initiatives.

He also stressed the importance of modern technology and called on stakeholders to collaborate to help Indonesia reduce plastic waste while continuing to support industrial development.
