Total Launches PLA Meltblown

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 99% of the world's population breathes air that exceeds its pollution limit standards. Sadly, this widespread exposure causes about 7 million premature deaths each year. Air filters have been proven to improve indoor air quality and have a positive impact on human health. Although many initiatives need to work together to clean the air, the need for scalable and effective air filtration solutions is now clear and urgent.

Luminy® L040, a PLA grade specially developed by TotalEnergies Corbion, is an attractive new alternative material made from ethically grown, non-GMO sugarcane. Designed for meltblown nonwoven processing, the material has an ultra-low viscosity and can be adapted to existing production lines.

Technically, L040 can achieve a filtration efficiency of more than 95% with a fiber diameter as fine as 1 micron, even without the addition of electrostatic additives. Its ability to maintain a stable electrostatic charge improves long-term filtration performance in many key applications, such as HVAC systems, home and industrial purifiers, and masks.

From an environmental perspective, Luminy® PLA also offers significant advantages: its carbon footprint is up to 85% lower than traditional plastics. Luminy® PLA grades with 30% recycled content are carbon neutral, while products made from 100% recycled PLA can even achieve a negative carbon footprint. Recycled Luminy® PLA retains the same quality and certification as virgin material. All parts of air filters can be made of PLA, which supports the design of mono-material filters, making them easier to enter the recycling cycle and helping to solve the waste management challenges posed by composite materials.

As air pollution continues to cause a global health crisis, the need for sustainable filter materials is clearer than ever. The development of Luminy® L040 is an important development that provides technical performance comparable to traditional materials while significantly reducing environmental impact. For filter manufacturers, it provides an immediate and practical path to meet the ever-increasing performance needs and sustainability expectations.
