Italy releases new logo for compostable packaging
To facilitate citizens and businesses to correctly place biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging into the wet waste recycling system, the Italian Biorepack Alliance has launched a new voluntary logo "Organico Biorepack". Packaging manufacturers can use this logo to prove that their products belong to the extended producer responsibility (EPR) system dedicated to organic recycling.
The logo was registered with the Italian Patent and Trademark Office on May 19, 2024. It is the result of two years of research, listening and discussion between Biorepack and Deloitte with all parties in the industry chain. In the coming months, the alliance will launch a nationwide publicity campaign to popularize the meaning and use of this new logo.
As mentioned earlier, this initiative has two goals:
on the one hand, to enhance the value of the alliance companies and publicize their participation in the world's first EPR system dedicated to organic recycling of compostable bioplastics;
on the other hand (but not least), to provide a simple, intuitive and effective tool to reduce citizens' mistakes and facilitate the work of composting facilities, thereby improving the quality and quantity of household wet waste recycling.
In fact, non-compostable plastic packaging is often mixed with organic waste, and sometimes the opposite happens, resulting in contamination of the two recycling processes. The new logo will be officially launched at the Second Italian Compostable Bioplastics Forum held in Rome on June 19, and the eleventh compostable biopolymer industry chain report will be released at the same time.
