Macau will further restrict the import of three types of disposable plastic products

Recently, the Director of the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau, Ye Kuo Lin, said that the preliminary plan is to impose import restrictions on three types of disposable plastic items starting next year (2026), namely plastic cotton swabs, plastic balloon sticks, and inflatable sticks.

The authorities said that they have communicated with the industry and basically obtained support, and will continue to promote relevant legislative work, hoping to launch it at the end of this year and take effect early next year.

In recent years, the Macau SAR government has gradually promoted the "plastic reduction" work. Among them, the "Restriction on the Provision of Plastic Bags" law came into effect on November 18, 2019, stipulating that except for a few specific commodities and shopping places, all retail activities shall not provide plastic bags for free.

Violators will be fined 1,000 Macau patacas for each plastic bag; From January 1, 2020, it is prohibited to import and transport disposable foam tableware (including lunch boxes, bowls, cups, and plates) to Macau;

From January 1, 2022, it is prohibited to import and transport disposable dining straws and beverage stirrers made of non-degradable plastic to Macau.

From January 1, 2023, the import of non-degradable disposable plastic knives, forks and spoons will be prohibited;

From January 1, 2024, the import of disposable non-degradable plastic plates, cups and disposable styrofoam food trays will be prohibited.
