McDonald's Japan upgrades plastic bags, bio-based content increased to 95%
On May 9, McDonald's Japan announced that it would revamp its plastic bags, increasing the proportion of plant-based biomass plastics from the current 50% to 95%. The new version of the plastic bag is scheduled to be implemented in all stores in Nagasaki Prefecture (except the 23 stores at Sasebo Air Force Base) by May 14, and then gradually implemented nationwide.
The company said that the new product will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2), by about 3,900 tons per year during the manufacturing process, and will not "change the experience of use."
McDonald's has set a goal of achieving "net zero emissions" by 2050. As part of its efforts to achieve this goal, the company has pledged to "change all containers and packaging to renewable, recyclable or certified materials by the end of 2025", and the change in plastic bags is part of this commitment.
