Polartec® Announces New Bio-Based Fabric Technology
The Milliken & Company brand, Polartec®, today announced the launch of a new bio-based Polartec® PowerShield® fabric technology that sets a new standard for sustainable weather protection. This launch marks Polartec's continued turn to find alternatives to living matter for petroleum-based products, while improving the efficiency and performance of fabrics and materials.
Polartec Power Shield's advanced integral membrane is composed of a combination of plant-based and non-PFAS materials, enabling an industry-leading combination of water repellency, wind resistance, long-lasting breathability, high durability and comfortable stretch. Designed for a variety of solutions, Polartec Power Shield is by far the most powerful and versatile waterproof and breathable technology in the company's fabric portfolio, and the latest addition to the company's complete conversion to non-PFAS alternatives across its entire fabric range. Element.
Steve Layton, President of Polartec said: "With the introduction of Power Shield, we are strengthening Polartec's ability to expand in breathable and waterproof solutions - from expedition-grade durability to fashion-forward hand and drape - while also Pioneered the use of biocontent to achieve these extraordinary functions. We are proud to introduce a proprietary solution constructed of all non-PFAS polymers and plant-based building blocks that do not compete with human food sources. Our The promise is to reduce reliance on oil while producing membranes that are more waterproof than when we bring them to market.”
Ramesh Kesh, Senior Vice President of Research, Sustainability and Textile Development at Milliken, said: "At the heart of the revolutionary capabilities of the Polartec Power Shield is a major advancement in membrane technology. The highly durable monolithic membrane is a barrier specifically designed to protect against Permeate the external weather, while transporting moisture vapor from the skin to the surface by molecular diffusion."
The end result is Polartec's first waterproof fabric that can be tested for water resistance greater than 20,000 mm in the hydrostatic pressure test and 20,000 g/m2/24h moisture vapour transmission rating in the breathability test. This sophistication and versatility is paired with a variety of fabrics: from soft stretch knits to bulletproof wovens to low-grip and high-stretch knits. The all-new Polartec Power Shield brings a soft-handed and sturdy barrier to the rain and snow outside that is indestructible over time.
Polartec Power Shield is now available to manufacturers and manufacturers worldwide in six face and backing fabrics - knitted and woven - and will debut as a market-ready product, available from fall 2023 for city-to-mountain use Wide range of uses.
