Recyclable candy paper packaging - Paper packaging for Smarties candy
Smarties is the first global candy brand in Australia and New Zealand to use fully recyclable paper packaging for sales. It has replaced disposable cardboard boxes, shared packaging, bags, and block shaped plastic packaging, and reduced the original plastic consumption in marine areas by 20 tons per year. Previously, Smarties used 250 million plastic packaging per year.
Smarties' candy paper wrappers come from sustainable sources, including coated paper, paper labels, and cardboard, and meet the ANZ 2025 national packaging target of 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging.
Recyclable paper uses water dispersible coating technology to remove non fibrous materials from the back of the paper. The material was evaluated using the Packaging Recyclability Assessment Portal (PREP) tool and found to be recyclable. It was confirmed as acceptable through roadside recycling and MRF in Australia and New Zealand.
Moreover, there is a recyclable message printed on the front of the packaging and a call for "recycle me" to show consumers that the paper material is recyclable. The Australian Recycling Label (ARL) is also printed on all packaging to raise consumer awareness and ensure Smarties fans know how to recycle packaging correctly.
