McDonald's China recently announced another upgrade to its "green packaging," with over 7,500 restaurants nationwide gradually adopting bio-based packaging materials. The primary packaging materials are polylactic acid (PLA) and paper, showcasing the characteristics of "innovation, environmental protection, experience, and safety." This initiative aims to ensure a more responsible selection and use of packaging materials while prioritizing the customer dining experience.
"Bio-based packaging materials, made from biomass using biotechnology, possess excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Due to their environmentally friendly and biodegradable properties, PLA bio-based materials have been widely used in packaging, catering, and medical fields in recent years and are also considered a strategic new material in my country. "Weng Yunxuan, an expert from the Biodegradable Plastics Committee of the China Plastics Industry Association, told reporters.
It's worth noting that packaging upgrades are not just about 'changing materials'; the consumer experience is also being subtly optimized.
According to Quan Yunting, head of packaging category procurement for McDonald's China supply chain, the new cold drink cup lid creatively uses a 'double-arch anti-overflow' structure. By raising the vent and retaining the direct drinking spout, the leak-proof performance of the new cold drink cup lid is effectively improved. The new hot drink cup lid, through a self-developed formula, enhances the toughness and heat resistance of PLA material, further optimizing the consumer experience.
'These details may seem small, but they directly affect the consumer's user experience.' Reporters found in actual use that the new cup lids are convenient to drink from and have a solid feel; the packaging upgrade has found a balance between sustainability and user experience.
'Green packaging is not something that can be achieved overnight, but rather a continuous relay race.'" Quan Yunting calculated the "ecological benefits": Over 7,500 restaurants nationwide have reduced their plastic usage by approximately 400 tons annually after adopting strawless lids. This packaging upgrade is expected to reduce petroleum-based plastic usage by over 5,800 tons annually.
"We hope to make environmental experiences tangible and participatory through a 'green growth engine'," said Gu Lei, Chief Influence Officer of McDonald's China. He added that when green packaging is integrated into consumption scenarios, more consumers can easily participate in green living while enjoying delicious food.
"The large-scale application of PLA bio-based materials by end-user companies is a forward-looking exploration of green packaging, which is of great significance to the development of the bio-based materials industry and the sustainable development of the catering industry," said Weng Yunxuan. From paper cups replacing plastic cups, to takeaway paper bags replacing plastic bags, and now to bio-based new packaging, under the guidance of building a beautiful China and achieving "dual carbon" goals, the environmental practices of catering companies are accelerating.
