The EU officially releases a draft to limit the use of microplastics in cosmetics
In September 2022, the European Commission finally published the long-awaited draft REACH regulation restrictions to limit the use of intentionally added microplastics in various products. The new proposal also includes stay-in cosmetics, covering skincare, fragrance and lip care products, with a transition period of 6-12 years. The new regulations, once implemented, will mean the EU will completely ban the use of microplastics in all cosmetics.
For perfume-neutral and leave-on cosmetics, the proposal gives a 6-year transition period. For lip care products, a transition period of 12 years is proposed. Many NGOs said that this transition period is too long, and it is not ruled out that adjustments will be made later.
