UAE: Sharjah imposes 25 cents duty on single-use plastic bags
Sharjah, the capital of the emirate of Sharjah, UAE, as announced in early August, Sharjah stores will impose a 25 fil (25 cents, local currency, 1 dirham = 100 fil) tariff on single-use plastic bags in October 2022 Effective on the 1st.
This move comes ahead of, and in preparation for, the UAE's complete ban on single-use plastic bags and materials starting on January 1, 2024.
The Sharjah Executive Council announced the two decisions on 23 August, following instructions from His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
